Welcome to historic Houston County, Texas, the first county established by the Republic of Texas. Sam Houston authorized the establishment of Houston County on June 12, 1837. The city of Crockett was selected as the county seat and named for the Tennessee scout, David Crockett, who camped near the area on his way to the Alamo.
